DE1: Introduction to subdivision in Rhino 3D

Design practise: Transformation “K to T”:

• Starting point 3 closed curves

Intro to “LOFT” function in polysurface:

• setting “straight sections” as a base for Subdivision
• “Record history” for simple parametric functionality
• “CAP” to close planar openings

Intro to “LOFT” function in Subdivision:

• move looping points for edge looping
• change direction of looping points
• “Record history” for simple parametric functionality
• “CAP” to close openings

Subdivision “toSubD”:

• “Points on” to show control points
• viewport “Flat shaded” for better view on planar surfaces
• “TAB” key to change to boxmode view which shows the borders of control points

Inbetween: Example SPHERE to show basic functionalities in subdivision:

• select single surfaces with STRG/SHIFT
• Subdivide surfaces to increase topology
• add or remove crease on an edge and vertice point
• select faces in a loop
• flatten selection of surfaces with “scale to zero”
• BRIDGE” two seperated objects

Design process morphing “K to T”:

• swap between boxmode and smooth mode
• To create smaller openings: subdivide surfaces to increase topology
• extrude openings with setup Gumball “Allign to object”

Prepare for printing:

• “Box Edit”: scale object to the right printing dimensions

“OffsetSubD” for  thickness for 3d printing:

• remove creases from edges
• Use “EMAP” (environment map) for better view of the object with reflecting environment

Export and basic setup in “CURA” for 3d printing:

• the aim for this design: only use support material for “touching the buildsplate”
